As you know, thanks in great part to Impact Austin, Grrl Action is now a year-round program that kicks off every year with the Summer Workshop. Girls can choose to participate only in the Summer Workshop or to continue on through the year. Click here to learn more about the program and download the Summer 2008 application.

THE SUMMER WORKSHOP

The Summer Workshop is a three-week intensive workshop run by Rude Mechanicals, Austin’s award winning theatre collective, in which girls envision, create, publish, and perform original works for the stage based on their own life experiences. Girls work with professional writers, performers, and designers to put their stories on stage for two free public performances. The summer workshop kicks off the Grrl Action program-year, and graduates of the summer program are invited to participate in the year-round artistic mentorship program. No former experience with creative writing or performance is required.

THE YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM

* This year-round program invites girls who participate in the summer workshop to develop long-term projects inspired by their individual interests and passions.
* Each girl is carefully paired with a professional woman mentor who provides one-on-one guidance for her project and gives her an entry into a possible future career.
* With help from their mentors, peers, and teachers, girls plan and execute long-term artistic projects, from art installations and books of poetry to solo performance and dance pieces to documentary and narrative films.
* Through ongoing field trips to performances, art exhibits, lectures, readings and concerts, girls are encouraged to become active participants in the local arts and activist communities.

Incisive writer and performer Kristina Wong mixes sharp humor and psychology in Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a swear-to-god-not-autobiographical, serio-comic portrayal of the high incidence of anxiety, depression and mental illness among Asian American women. Tangling, spinning, and mixing yarns, she asks: Which came first? The sky-high suicides of Asian American women? The maddening world? And when the heck do we get to climax? Wong’s irreverent and provocative work has given her a national cult following for “politically charged art with unapologetic humor." –Bitch Magazine. Knitters, cuckoo and not, are invited to knit in the audience during the show.

SUGAR
written & performed by Robbie McCauley

Award-winning theater artist Robbie McCauley will present Sugar, a solo performance piece that examines her own struggle and survival with diabetes as connected to slavery, war, work, romance and food. Written in a circular, historical style, Sugar is the latest installment in a series of performance theater works by McCauley that refer to her family’s survival since the 19th century as part of the African-American working class.

In 1998, her Buffalo Project was highlighted as one of the "the 51 (or so) Greatest Avant-Garde Moments" by the Village Voice, a roster that included work by artists such as Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, and John Cage.
